What you can do as a parent to help

Having a child with a vascular birthmark can be a trying time.  Whether it is the long process of watching a hemangioma shrink or the long process of treatment for each type of birthmark, it can be very stressful for the child and family.  Be involved in your child's care by seeking knowledge, asking questions and getting in touch with a support group.  Parents are often comforted by others who have gone through the same type of experience.  The internet is a great place to do all of this.  Below is a list of various places to get more information and support.

About Face  International - Information and support for people with facial differences.

Vascular Birthmarks Foundation - An excellent resource website from Linda Shannon who helped write the only book for parents about vascular birthmarks.  You can order her book on line from this web site. www.birthmark.org

Vascular Anomalies Center - Located in Boston, this world renowned clinic has a very in depth information page on various birthmarks and their treatments.

Vascular Birthmarks Clinic - Located at the Alberta Children's hospital in Calgary, Alberta.  The only multidisciplinary team clinic in western Canada.  Their mission statement reads " To provide to children with vascular birthmarks and their families a comprehensive and multidisciplinary evaluation, education and treatment."  You will need a referral from your family physician or pediatrician to set up an appointment at the clinic.  For consultation please contact Marg Sletton, Clinical Resource Nurse, 403-943-7308   http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca/ACH/ACH/services/outpatient/vascular.htm
